120 x 180cm, Acrylic on canvas

‘We as the Bunuba people or tribe didn’t call these great sprit-beings Wangjina, they had their own name.

My ancestors believe that this being was the Nowangu (father) of everyone represented in the Rock-Art gallery site at Tangalma (Carpenter’s Gap shelter), Napier Range, WA.

The small figure is Mungyi, his wife. The Rock-Art gallery site is Bunuba country, our neighbours to the North are the Unggumi people and to the South are the Gooniyandi people.

My ancestors believed the reason Nowangu has no mouth is because he answered hi people through the weather and the animals.

There was a great battle that took place north of here neat the Kimberley Coast in the Dreamtime. The great battle was fought at a place called Karndirri, where the Warrorra people come from. When the battle was over, most of the spirit beings fled everywhere in the Kimberley region. This is why most of our Wangjina are different in the Kimberley.

I was given these stories from a few of my Elders, some past, some currently here with us. I am happy to acknowledge my history through my art.’ – Jack Macale Loodgengardinge.
