Parrying Shield

Year 1965. Pitjantjatjara. Carving on Mulga wood 68 x 8cm

Description

This parrying shield is transitional as the carved design to the back is traditional and the carvings to the front were directed at the tourist market. The piece was made at Yatala in South Australia which was a Church Mission settlement. Those running the Mission suggested that kangaroo and emu motifs be placed on artefacts as it was felt the traditional designs had no marketability.
