The totem of Billy’s mother’s people, the Takalaka people, the brolga can be found in the flat land Country in Croydon far North Queensland where she was born. Known for its graceful dancing the brolga is a sight to see, explains the artist:
“Their mating ritual is famous: One brolga flies down to a group of standing brolgas, it bounces lightly as it lands, then bows, wings out stretched toward its mate, who bounces and bows in return. Soon all birds in the flock are lifting their feet, bouncing and bowing their necks and spreading their wings, together celebrating the brolga ceremonial dance.”
