Patterns of Life – Bungaru (Fresh Water Turtle), 2005
203 x 87cm, Acrylic on canvas
Billy recalls swamp frogs as being a common sight when he was young. They’re extremely sensitive to changes in their environment and pollution has drastically reduced their numbers to the point where they’re now rarely seen or heard.

In times of drought, when the food source was scarce, the Aboriginal women would treat around swamp areas to find the bungaru which would be hibernating under the rotting, dry swamp bed. The women would feel around with their feet to find the turtles. This would easily provide enough food to feed their family.
