Takalaka (Serpent), 2004
84 x 198cm, Acrylic on canvas
Takalaka tradition tells of a serpent living beneath the Gregory Ranges. Just on dusk the serpent emerges from the spring, causing the water to rise. As the serpent returns at dawn, the water subsides – the spring is dry. The Takalaka people were able to survive in such a seemingly dry Country because they knew there was water at night.
