Stories from Palm Island – The Two Sisters (How the Water Came), 2005
86.5 x 200cm, Acrylic on canvas

A giant water lily grew at a sacred water hole near Ingham. The old people of Hinchinbrook tribe told the woman that when they were collecting the water lily bulbs they were not to pull up the giant lily as it held all of the water. A young girl did not listen and pulled the bulb of the giant water lily. Soon a big flood of water rushed out over the land, creating the sea around Palm Island. Two sisters who were digging for food near White Rock were caught in the flood and tried to use their digging sticks to keep above the water but they drowned. They became the two reefs near White Rock.
